An Effective Line of Defense

Mary Momoh Smiling and Holding Her Net

Mary Momoh Smiling and Holding Her Net

Mary comes from a family with very humble beginnings.  She was born and grew up in a small village, near the city of Bo, Sierra Leone, which was overrun by the rebels during Sierra Leone’s civil war.

Her family relocated to Freetown as there were no jobs for a while and the family’s subsistence farm had been burnt to the ground.  Her parents are now petty traders – earning a bare $50 a month.

Mary loves to do chores and help around the house.  Mary hates mosquitoes and her dream is to find a permanent solution to the mosquito problem in Freetown.  She was very happy to receive a net as it provides an immediate solution to the mosquito situation in her life – providing an effective shield.

Dauda, a future banker, now enjoys his sleep

Dauda - Future Banker

Dauda - Future Banker

Dauda, a young boy from Sierra Leone, used to spend the night on a mat on the bare floor.  After he received the insecticide-treated bed net, he now sleeps with his mother and sibling on a single bed made of grass.

His mother is a petty trader and the main provider for her family.  With a monthly income of US$30, she is challenged to meet the basic needs of the family and had been unable to purchase the much needed mosquito net.

Dauda wants to be a banker when he grows older.  The buzzing and bites of mosquitoes habitually woke him up.  How with this net, he sleeps soundly and peacefully with uninterrupted dreams of being a banker.

Thanks Ahmed for providing sweet dreams!

Relief at last for Sallay

Relief at last for Sallay

Sally Lewis, a young girl from Sierra Leone, lives with her mother, father, brothers, and sisters in a single bedroom apartment zinc sheet home with no running water and no electricity. Sally’s father is a polygamist and has another family; he sleeps alternate weeks with Sally’s mother and siblings.

Sally’s mother is a petty trader and the main provider of the home with a monthly income of US $40 – an amount that is not enough to cover the family needs. Sally wakes up very early to fetch water for her household before going to school.  Sally wants to be a lawyer when she grows up.

Needless to say, the family was delighted to receive this bed net as they desperately needed one.  Their neighborhood is infested with noisy mosquitoes that seem to find a way to get underneath the bed sheet that she covers herself with at night.

Thanks Tchiyiwe for helping Sally get relief from mosquitoes and malaria!

Richlyn's net is a blessing

Richlyn Koroma attends the Christ Evangelical church in the Wellington municipality outside Freetown, Sierra Leone. This friendly and promising child likes to read and wants to be a lawyer when she grows up.

Single mother joyful over nets for entire family

The Mansaray Family

The Mansaray Family

The Mansaray family live in a small 2 room apartment in the greater Wellington suburb of Freetown, Sierre Leone. Mabinty, the mother and her four children are originally from Makeni.  They moved to Freetown after the civil war.

Mabinty’s husband passed away during the civil war which means she is the main provider for the family.  Mabinty is a petty trader.  She sells miscellaneous cooking items such as cooking oil, firewood, salt, pepper, tins of tomato paste, soup seasoning cubes etc. The income from the sale of these items barely helps to keep a roof over their heads and in their apartment, walled with corrugated, aluminum sheets. They struggle to make ends meet and sometimes have to go without food, which has meant a mosquito net, although much needed, was considered a luxury.

The area of the Wellington community where the Mansaray family dwells is close to a swamp and infested with mosquitoes. Mabinty was therefore delighted to receive the mosquito nets. These nets will help ensure that they stay healthy and free from mosquitoes and malaria.

Thanks Eran for providing protection for this entire family!

Mabinty sends her gratitude and best wishes.
