Marie Received a Net and Can Stay Healthy for School!

Marie - holding her new net - an answer to prayer
Dear louis,

Marie lives with her mother and two siblings in a zinc sheet house with no running water and no electricity.  Her father is deceased and her mother has no steady income. Marie and her family depend on the kindness of good-hearted people and their offerings everyday.

Marie has known poverty all her life. After waking up early to fetch water from a community tap far from home, she walks to school just wearing plastic slippers. Since her mother struggles to pay her school fees, Marie’s education is often disrupted.

The malaria net was an answer to the family’s prayers–it has been on their wish list for quite some time.  This net will help ensure that Marie stays malaria-free. Thanks Louis for answering the family’s prayers!

Provision of Vitamin Supplements Meets Need

Margaret
Dear MariaJose,

Margaret is a promising child who lives with her two sisters and mother in a single bedroom, mud house with no running water.  Margaret’s father abandoned them five years ago.  She loves to help out around the home with fetching water from the stream, cooking and laundry.  Margaret is very talkative and would like be a lawyer when she grows up.

Her mother is a petty trader/market vendor – selling food provisions/groceries and earning a monthly income of about $50.  Due to this low income level, they scratch and scrape to make ends meet – skipping meals and eating meals that are nutritionally deficient.

Margaret was delighted to receive the vitamin supplements as nutrition has been a concern.  She has been taught the importance of a good and complete nutrition.

Thanks Maria for helping to make this necessity and desire a reality!

More Alert at School Thanks to a Net

Bintu
Dear Pradeep,

Bintu attends a Methodist Primary school in Wellington, Sierra Leone. Bintu lives with her relatives as her parents live over 150 miles away. Bintu does a lot of domestic work including taking care of her cousin’s baby. They live in a three bedroom mud home with electricity, but no running water. The family’s monthly income of US $50 is not enough to sustain Bintu’s family. They periodically receive some help from other relatives.

Bintu was delighted to receive her mosquito net which she says ‘helps her sleep much better at night”.  With a good night of sleep, she says she is “more alert” in school.  She hopes to become a banker when she grows up.

Thank you Pradeep for providing Bintu with this mosquito net!

Better Health Through Vitamin Supplements

Alie holding his new bottle of multi-vitamin supplments
Dear Trudi,

Alie lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone, with his mother and five siblings in a mud home with no running water or electricity.

Alie’s father died two years ago after a prolonged illness which swept away their finances. Alie’s mother is the main provider for her six children and by selling firewood she earns $50 a month. This is not enough to cover the needs of the entire household.

Alie helps his mother transport the firewood whenever there is a purchase, and he does light errands for people within his community to raise lunch money for school.  Because of their limited finances, the family meals are frequently not balanced or nutritious.

Thanks Trudi for helping to supplement Alie’s diet with vitamin supplements. This will go a long way toward ensuring his good health!

Yes! No More Mosquito Bites

Adama with her new net
Dear Laurie,

Adama stays with her aunty in Wellington in a single bedroom apartment with no running water, no electricity and a poor toilet facility. Adama’s father survives by breaking large granite stones retrieved from the hillside into smaller sizes, which are sold to people building their houses. The smaller stones are used for laying concrete foundations, concrete floors etc. His monthly income of US $30 is not enough to take care of his daughters. He therefore decided to ask his sister, Adama’s aunt, to take care of Adama.

Adama is a smart and promising girl who has known poverty all her life. Her aunt has 3 children and two dependent relatives.  Her monthly income of US $100 is not enough to cover this family’s expenses for the month.  Because Adama is active in the Church children’s fellowship, some church members periodically offer her assistance. Adama is a very good dancer and likes reading at her leisure. Adama also likes reading and mathematics at school and she is contemplating being a nurse or a banker when she grows up.

She was exceptionally happy to receive a mosquito net as she had been sleeping exposed to mosquitoes and their bites.  Adama hates getting bitten by mosquitoes.

Thanks Laurie for providing this net that will keep her safe and secure from mosquitoes and malaria.  When she received the net, she happily yelled out “Yes! No more mosquito bites.”

Grace in Sierra Leone with her school supplies
Dear Sylvester, Callan, and Tricia,

Grace was born on 14th September 2004.  Her father is an office cleaner with a monthly income of about $53.  Her mother is a petty trader/small goods market vendor – with an irregular income – ranging from about $30 to $45 a month.  Grace has 4 siblings and the family lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone. They live in a zinc sheet home, with no running water and no electricity.

Grace attends the Murray Town Army Municipal School and her favorite subjects are Reading and Writing. Her hobbies are reading, singing and helping others. Grace’s overall health is good. She is a diligent student, an avid learner and when she grows up she would like to become a Lawyer.

Because of the weak financial base of the family, they were delighted to hear that Grace had been selected to receive full sponsorship/scholarship for a year. The total support that you have provided (tuition, books, school supplies and meals for a full year) will bring stability to her life and will be a tremendous help to the family.

Grace and her family were delighted to receive this award. The family expresses their gratitude to Sylvester (1 month!), Callan (3 months!) and Tricia (8 months!) for donating and together making a true and lasting difference in Grace’s life.

Malaria Free Thanks to a New Mosquito net!

Emma
Dear Josh,

Emma was born at the peak of Sierra Leone’s civil war. Her father, an ex-combatant, was integrated into the Sierra Leone Army and dismissed two years later. Emma’s health is good despite the difficult circumstances surrounding her. Emma and her 5 siblings have had to rely on their neighbor’s meals to survive at times. Her father is now a fisherman earning a monthly income of about US $100. This is supplemented by what her mother, a food vendor at the local market, earns – about US $50.  These amounts together are not enough to cover the family’s basic needs.

Emma and the rest of her family live in a small apartment with a single bedroom room and a living room.  Their zinc sheet house has no electricity, no water and poor toilet facilities. Everyday after school Emma goes to the market to assist her mother with selling vegetables.  She then returns home to help prepare food for the entire family before her mother arrives home. When she grows up Emma wants to be a medical doctor. She hates getting sick and was very happy to receive a treated mosquito.  With this net, she is guaranteed to stay malaria free.

Thanks Josh for helping her stay healthy and malaria-free!
