Dear Fay,

Rosaline is ten years old. She lives with her father, stepmother, three brothers, and four sisters in a three bedroom apartment. At home, Rosaline has no running water and no electricity.

Rosaline’s father is unemployed. Her mom passed away years ago. Her stepmother is a petty trader and the main provider of the home with monthly income of $60, but this is not enough to cover the basic family needs.

Ishiatu lives with her father, mother, brother, and sister in a single bedroom mud house with no running water and no electricity. Ishiatu attends the Ahmadiyya muslim primary school. Ishiatu likes playing balance ball, a children’s  game which is popular in Sierra Leone.

Ngozi has a Nigerian father and a Sierra Leonean mother. Her mother is a nurse and is the main provider of the home and they live in a two bedroom apartment with no running water and electricity. Ishmael attends  preschool and he has to walk a mile to school everyday. Ishmael and his family live in single bedroom with no running water and a poor toilet facility.

Kadiatu attends  junior secondary school and she walks two miles to and from school everyday. Kadiatu lives in a very old mud house (two bedroom) with her father, mother, and siblings. In their home there is no electricity, no pipe borne water, and a poor toilet facility.

Her father and her mother are petty traders and coproviders of the home with a monthly income of $90, which is not enough to cover the basic family needs. Most of the time they go without food, especially when business is bad. If it were not for the timely intervention of some neighbors, hunger will have ended their lives. Ibrahim lives with his father, mother, and four sisters in a two bedroom house with no running water but with electricity. His father is a driver and is the main provider for the home.  With a monthly income of $60, he cannot cover the basic family needs, including malaria prevention. Ibrahim’s mother works as a manucurist and assists her husband in taking care of the family needs. Ibrahim’s parents leave home very early and return very late to make ends meet. Everyday Ibrahim walks four miles to and from school except when money is available for transportation. At school Ibrahim enjoys physical health education and Mathematics. He wants to be a banker when he grows up.

Alice is a promising child that lives under adverse conditions. She is lucky if she has one meal each day, and she has no proper place to sleep. She usually sleeps on a mat on the floor.

Alice and her family live in single bedroom apartment with no running water and no electricity. Her father is a teacher and is the main provider of the home with a monthly income of $70 – not enough to cover the family needs. Alice’s mother is a housewife and does not contribute financially to the family. Thank you Pooja, your support will give Alice a boost in life!

Alice does light errands to raise money to pay her school fees and also her lunch. Alice wakes up early to fetch water from a nearby tap before she goes to school (five buckets). Because they have no electricity Alice uses a kerosene lamp to study at night. In school Alice enjoys English, mathematics, and reading class. Alice wants to be a medical doctor when she grows up.
