Girls Education in Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone over 2.7 million children, or 48 percent of the country’s entire population, live in poverty and few have the opportunity to obtain an education. Many families cannot afford to send more than one child to school, because of this families often opt to send their sons to school and not their daughters. Door of Hope works in Freetown, Sierra Leone providing top notch girls education in Africa.

Joshua Sandy, a secondary school teacher in Freetown,  founded Door of Hope after he began to realize the discrepancy between boys  and girls education in Sierra Leone and the general lack of education in Africa. It soon became clear to him that lack of nourishment, suffered by nearly all children, was directly linked to a child’s chance at succeeding.

Many children receive school supplies through Door of Hope. For parents school tuition is only one of many costs associated with sending a child to school in Africa. Both the lost income a child provides by helping out at home and school supplies can prove to be substantial financial stresses.

In order for students to reach their full potential proper nutrition is necessary. Many children in Sierra Leone lack consistent diets and suffer from vitamin deficiencies. Door of Hope provides 15$ vitamin supplements that have been proven to help with boys and girls education by increasing attendance, attitude, and focus.

Mosquito born illnesses are particularly rough for a child aspiring to an education. Most mosquito bites occur at night when a child is asleep. In order to prevent mosquito bites Door of Hope offers mosquito net canopies to families of boys and girls who support child eduction.
